An evolved pPHO89-phytase strain surpasses the production levels of the pAOX1-phytase strain. (A) Three evolved pPHO89-phytase strains (J5, J6 and J7), derived from pP89-J, were tested for phytase production as shown in Fig. 2A. Data are presented as the mean ± SEM from 3 to 5 independent cultures for each strain. (B) The production level of parental pP89-J and the three evolved strains was compared for each time point with that of the pAOX1-based strain, taken as the unit. *, p < 0.05; **, p < 0.01; *** p < 0.005. (C) SDS‒PAGE analysis of the medium recovered from cultures of the pAOX1-based and the evolved pP89-J6 strain.
