Purified A5 4mer spider silk protein produced through the microbial conversion of depolymerized polyethylene. The silk protein was dialyzed into water and lyophilized, resulting in several discrete and cohesive chunks of a white, polymeric material that ranged in length from approximately 1.5–4 cm. This image was obtained directly after the freeze-drying process, and the protein sample had not been spun into fibers or put through any additional material processing
