Structural models of the formate hydrogen lyase (FHL) complex in the cytoplasmic membrane of E. coli. The FHL complex consists of formate dehydrogenase (FdhF) and hydrogenases 3. Formate is the electron donor for FdhF, and the electron is then transferred through HycB, HycF, HycG and finally to the large subunit of hydorgenase 3 (HycE). Protons accept electrons at the large subunit to form hydrogen. Arrows indicate electron transfer through the subunits of the FHL complex
