Growth of Y. lipolytica using different nitrogen sources in a synthetic medium. The yeast strain Y. lipolytica JMY3675 was cultured in a synthetic medium using glycerol as the carbon source and either ammonium chloride or ammonium sulfate as the nitrogen source. Nitrogen sources were mixed with glycerol to obtain a C/N ratio of 25 or 35. The lipid content (percent of CDW) was estimated using Bodipy fluorescence and the green fluorescent protein optical filter (ex: 486 nm/em: 508 nm; Gain = 80). Medium components are described below the figure and the concentration in g L⁻¹ of each component is indicated after the corresponding letter (YNB yeast nitrogen base; Nc ammonium chloride; Ns ammonium sulfate; G glycerol)
