Summary illustration. In cells of recombinant B. megaterium, the membrane proteins CYP11A1 and AdR are localized to the PHB granule-surrounding monolayer. Adx is localized to the cytosol, serving as an electron shuttle between CYP11A1 and AdR. Cholesterol is stored inside the PHB core and can be delivered to CYP11A1. After undergoing the side-chain cleavage, the product pregnenolone is released from the cell.
