Co-expression of XKS improves alcohol yield in S. pastorianus. Alcohol(g L−1) production (A, B) and xylose utilization (C, D) by S. pastorianus (CMBS-51) expressing xyl1/ xdh1/XKS (); xyl1/xdh1 (); or the empty vector pRS42H (). Fermentations in YEP supplemented with 50 g L−1 (A and C) or 20 g L−1 (B and D) xylose were carried for 12 days and samples taken at the intervals shown. The values represent the mean of triplicate independent experiments and error bars show the standard error from the mean.
