Scheme of the CYP11B1-catalyzed 11 β-hydroxylation of 11-deoxycortisol yielding cortisol. Electrons are transferred from NADPH via AdR and Adx to CYP11B1, which activates molecular oxygen and incorporates one oxygen atom into the steroid substrate by means of a hydroxylation in a regio- and stereoselective manner, while the other oxygen is reduced to water.
