  1. Analysis of mRNA from shake-flask cultures was performed using real time quantitative PCR. The data were normalized using the reference genes ACT1 and PDA1 and the signal was scaled to mRNA copies/cell according to a SAGE study [32], in which copies of mRNA/cell of the reference genes had previously been determined. Standard deviation in parentheses was calculated for the samples (n = 4). A single asterisk denotes significance at the P < 0.05 level (paired 2-tailed T-test), and a double asterisk at P < 0.01 level.
