  1. Determinations were performed in distilled air-saturated water with the concentration of cells 0.5 g/L of dry weight and started by addition of 1% carbon substrate (glucose or xylose). The respiratory rate was expressed as nanomoles of O2 consumed per minute per mg of cells (dry weight)
