NADPH regeneration measured spectrophotometrically at 340 nm using recombinant E. coli JM109 cells in the presence of different combinations of 0.3 mM NADP+, 50 mM citrate/10 mM MgCl2 (without any substrate) and glucose (50 mM). Experiments were performed three times and the error bars represent the standard deviation obtained from the three replicates. *P < 0.001 compared to control (cells alone with no other additions) at the same time point; Statistical analyses were carried out using One-way ANOVA followed by Student–Newman–Keuls post hoc test
