Hypothetical model of H2 production in Nostoc strain overproducing Flv3B. Nitrogen fixation occurring in the heterocyte produces H2 which is recycled by the Hup H2ase. Overexpression of the flv3B gene increases the uptake of O2 reinforcing the microoxie inside the heterocyte. The induction of hox genes transcription leads to H2 production.
