Superimposition of CsCE onto the RmCE-epilactose (lactose) complex based on the atoms of the 4 conserved active site residues. Based on this model of the binding site structure, the residues that are involved directly in the epimerization of the glucose moiety (His247 and His377) were observed to be highly conserved in the CE and AGE family. Additionally, Tyr114 and Asn184 were proposed to play a role in stabilizing the product and were observed to be closely associated with the stability of the enzyme-lactose/lactulose intermediate complex.
