Performance of two-gene combinations compared to the overexpression of only one of the genes. Bar plots showing the relative specific product yield for selected gene combinations and the respective single genes in wild-type (a) and Δopi1 yeast strains (b). LHS1- PGAL1 and KAR2–PGAL1 seem to have synergistic negative effect since their combination decreases the specific product yield below the level of the combined or individual effects. LHS1–PKAR2 with SIL1–PKAR2 had the most positive effect on specific product yield out of all the double gene combinations, but the increase was at the same level as achieved by insertion of SIL1- PKAR2 alone. Although the effects of the added genes are similar for Δopi1 (b), the effects are higher in magnitude in wild-type strain background (a). Error bars represent the standard deviation and the selected values were obtained with 0.5 % galactose induction at 30 °C. Specific product yield is normalized to the mean specific product yield of the respective background strain grown in the same conditions
