  1. Data is presented as means ± standard deviations of at least two independent experiments. For strains Pen334 and 332 only ~50 % of the initially present (d)-xylose were consumed. All experiments were performed in 250 mL shake flasks filled with 50 mL medium and shaken at 200 rpm.
