HPLC and TLC profiles of carotenoids produced by P. rhodozyma mutant strain MK19. Cells were cultured in flasks for 120 h. a HPLC profiles (detection wavelength 480 nm). b TLC profiles. Peak numbers in a correspond to arrow numbers in b. 1 astaxanthin; 2 unknown carotenoid; 3,4 keto derivatives; 5 β-carotene. Astaxanthin (66% of total carotenoids) was the predominant carotenoid. The unknown pigment (2), rather than β-carotene (5), was the second most abundant.
