Relative cytoplasmatic protein concentrations of RsTAL, Pc4CL, ZmCCR and ZmCAD when heterologously expressed in E. coli BL21 (DE3) lacI Q1. For each protein, three gene variants with different SD sequence–START codon spacings (5, 9, or 13 nt) were expressed. Relative protein concentrations were determined by IDMS–LC–MS/MS, and results for each protein, whose gene had a 5 nt SD sequence–START codon spacing upstream of the open reading frame were used as reference for comparison.
