Schematic representation of tannin degradation pathway followed by S. gallolyticus . When R1 is (H) the represented compounds are a protocatechuate ester, protocatechuic acid, and catechol. When R1 is (OH) the represented compounds are a gallate ester, gallic acid, and pyrogallol. R2 could be (OCH3) representing methyl ester of gallic/protocatechuic acid, (OCH2CH3) representing ethyl esters, (OCH2CH2CH3) propyl esters, (glucose) as in tannic acid, or (epigallocatechin) in epigallocatechin gallate. TanASg and TanBSg represented tannase enzymes and SgdB, SgdC, and SgdD, represent the three subunits of gallate decarboxylase enzyme.
