Organization of the artificial gene clusters used for production of each phenylpropanoic acid in E. coli . Three heterologous enzymes must be expressed in E. coli to mediate the synthesis of ferulic acid from tyrosine. All constructs contained the T7 promoter and the RBS in front of each gene and the T7 terminator located in the rear of each gene. opTAL is a codon-optimized TAL enzyme.
